what to drink with the vma nominees

I worked at MTV for many years and totally miss being involved in the production of the show. But now I get to sit back with a glass and watch it all go down without working! Wooooot. Here are this year’s nominees for Video of the Year along with what you should drink for each of them.

Camila Cabello ft. Young Thug – “Havana”

It’s Cuba, we’re not gonna drink wine! Start the night by making yourself a ginger mojito: white rum, ginger beer, fresh grated ginger, simple syrup, lime juice, and sprigs of mint over ice. Also super refreshing for our still-hot days.

Ariana Grande – “No Tears Left to Cry”

This part looks like she’s in a giant glass of sparkling wine. Namely, Blanc de Noirs (“white of blacks”) which means the Champagne is all Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier, but no Chardonnay.

The Carters – “APES**T”

If the lyrics celebrate “Sippin’ my favorite alcohol,” far be it from me to tell you what your favorite is. Pot luck here, grab your most-loved!

Bruno Mars ft. Cardi B – “Finesse (Remix)”

Pour out a wine that’s drippin’ with finesse as Bruno says. I really love the crisp, elegant Sauvignon white wines from Alto Adige, Italy (they drop the “blanc” off the end). They tend to be more minerally with a great white floral bouquet. I’d go for the Tramin ($18.99) or the Tiefenbrunner (an excellent producer in the region, $27.99).

Childish Gambino – “This Is America”

Obvi, we’re drinking American. You probably haven’t had a ton of wine from Virgina (though learn about my wine camp adventures here). But with over 200 wineries and 7 AVAs, Virginia’s the 7th largest winemaking region in US. Try a spicy, light red berry Cab Franc from Early Mountain (owned by Steve Case and his wife Jean) or Barboursville ($27.99).

Drake – “God’s Plan”

Drake gave away his entire million-dollar video budget to people in need. And when you drink Chassagne-Montrachet, you also believe in higher beings.

OK, so let’s take this to a vote!
