superbowl of wine: broncos vs panthers

720x405-42-47326513As all grapefriends know, you drink WINE while watching the big game. Even the New York Times reported that “wine sales have been steadily growing faster than beer sales, especially around Super Bowl time, a reflection of the changing preferences of younger fans and an increase in women who watch the country’s biggest sporting event.” Yep, grapefriends have been doing that for years. Glad the rest of the country is finally catching on.

So what bottles should you pop for the Broncos/Panthers showdown?

If you’re rooting for the Panthers, a fitting wine would be one like QB Cam Newton: brawny, muscular, aggressive. These attributes can often be found in young reds, especially new world ones. A Napa Cab will be heavy and saturated with fruit – the warm sun there ripens the grapes much more than in other regions, so you wind up tasting a lot more blackberry over, say, earthiness in the wine. If it’s young, you’ll also get a lot of grippy aggressive tannins that will mellow out with age.

Perfect for Panthers: 2013 Newton Unfiltered Cab, $55 here.

If you’re rooting for the Broncos, a perfect reflection of Peyton Manning would be an aged, complex blend, a veteran that’s perfected its game. Pop a Left Bank Bordeaux which blends Cab with Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. And since Peyton is one of the best QBs of all time, make sure it’s a Grand Cru which is made from the best grapes and vineyards. Last, make sure it’s an older vintage, aged to perfection.

Perfect for Peyton: I’d go for Chateau Margaux, which is one of the best wines I’ve ever had. Peyton’s birth year (1976) wasn’t a good vintage in Margaux, but 1996 was excellent. And, it’s only $700! Grab it here.

As for who’s the bigger grapefriend, Peyton doesn’t really drink wine (that’s Eli’s domain, while Peyton’s more beer) but grapefriend readers will recall that he does have a wine lockerpeyton-manning-wine-locker

Cam Newton doesn’t drink. In fact, he’s never had a drink in his life! He told Glamour magazine he’ll have his first sip the day he got married. Maybe he’ll have a little bubbly if he wins tonight? Well, I’m still rooting for Peyton…
