Today is Sauvignon Blanc Day. Yeah, it’s just a holiday made up by St. Supery winery but so what? Any excuse for a holiday or for appreciating I wine I love is ok by me!

Sauv Blanc can vary its style a lot from country to country. My favorites are the minerally ones from Sancerre and also the “gooseberry” ones from New Zealand and South Africa. (By the way, doesn’t gooseberry totally sound like a made-up fruit, straight out of Willy Wonka or something? I guess they’re more popular outside of the US, but the best way I can describe it is that it smells like asparagus and cantaloupe.)

Anyway, the consistent characteristics of Sauv Blanc anywhere are that it has racy acidity! It’s steely! It has a citrus-y fruit aroma and taste!

As far as a celeb comparison, I’d go with Keira Knightley. She’s got a lot of grit to her in the way that Loire Sauv Blancs do with their mineral undertone and elegance. And as for the SA and NZ ones (Marlborough is the most-known spot in the latter), she’s also got a side that’s packed with personality and playfulness.
