grapefriend gift guide 2022!

It’s that time of year when everyone starts asking me what wine to get for all the people they need to give a gift to—friend, family, boss, doorman. Here are some excellent suggestions, all under $100.

Reds: Two reds that taste like they’re twice the price.

  • Chateau Lassègue: A St. Émilion Grand Cru that punches way above its $60 price. Velvety and rich but balanced with great acidity. Also absolutely delicious with roast meat for your holiday dinners!
  • Guinigi Brunello di Montalcino: Brunello is another often-unaffordable red, but this one isn’t and has wonderful light black cherry and leather notes. $52

White: Try expanding someone’s wine world with a fantastic white.

  • Livio Felluga Illivio: Livio is credited with upping the quality of wines in northern Italy’s Friuli region. Made in honor of Livio’s 85th birthday, Illivio’s blend of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, and Picolit has beautiful notes of toasted almond and honey. $46

Sparkling: A great gift to kick off a new year.

  • To celebrate 200 years of the founder’s birthday, artist Catherine Gran created the design for the Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve Collector’s Edition, $80. Gran says, “My design is an ode to his deep-rooted, creative mentality which reaches all the way up to the most renowned stars in the sky and raises up like a sort of temple, a hall of fame.”
