more wine! what to drink for game of thrones

The last season is finally here! We’ve been granted so many amazing wine moments and met so many hardcore medieval grapefriends throughout the years, and I’ll be sad to see them go. All good goblets must be drained, however. Here are my bets on who will win the throne, and their grapey pairings:

  • Dany: She has magical powers and dragons that make her a little outer-worldly. Feels Champagne-y to me, and I’d go with Ruinart Brut Blanc de Blancs. Why? Ruinart is the oldest Champagne house and pretty rare as it’s much smaller production than other houses; Brut because (let’s be honest) Dany can be pretty brutal with those dragons; and Blanc de Blancs which is made from only Chardonnay grapes because she has that almost-white blonde hair.
  • Jon Snow: With a guy so brooding and complex, Barolo is the perfect fit. Made from the Nebbiolo grape, it has a lot of backbone and starts to really show its complexity with age. Yep, sounds like our favorite (former) bastard. Try this awesome Prunotto.
  • Cersei: She used to be more of a throne contender but is sort of on her own now. She’s still a bold badass though, and would likely be drinking some gritty, tannic red like this Monastrell.
  • White Walkers: If these dudes ultimately take over I’d give up wine all together and go with whiskey! Johnnie Walker White Walker whiskey features single malts from Cardhu and Clynelish, one of Scotland’s most northern distilleries. Blender George Harper said, “Whiskies from Clynelish have endured long Scottish winters, not dissimilar to the long periods endured by the Night’s Watch.”
