grape: Merlot. It gets a bad rap from Sideways, but it’s an excellent grape that just got overdone. Revisit some good ones and you’ll get why it got so popular in the first place.
producer: Emmolo. This is a relatively new wine line made by Jenny Wagner, who’s the daughter of the Caymus winemaker. We were at a dinner with tons of great Caymus wines, but this one was my favorite.
region: Napa, Oak Knoll. A lot of wines from Napa get overripe because it’s so warm, but the Oak Knoll part is abit cooler so the wines from there can be more balanced.
yum factors: Such great plum and cinnamon flavor, which was absolutely fantastic with the quail we had at Craft. Merlot is often super smooth and velvety, and this is an excellent example of that. This wine got me really excited about Merlot again. You might not think of reds for summer, but this would be the perfect thing to keep you warm around a nighttime bonfire.
