drinking in downton abbey

Downton Abbey takes place in England, so you wouldn’t think you’d need an translator to watch it. But when it comes to wine speak, you might! Check out Anna’s speech to Molesley as she tells him about what wines to serve as they go through dinner prep:

ANNA
Mr. Carson likes to serve two white wines, which you should open and decant just before they eat. A light one for the hors d’oeuvres, then a heavy one with the soup. Keep that going for the fish, and then change to the Claret, which you should really decant now. There’s a pudding wine, and after that whatever they want in the drawing room with their coffee.

These are all good choices for what they’re eating. Two things that may require grapefriend’s help:

1) claret: This is just what the British call red Bordeaux. Grapenut tried to use the term on me the other day and I was like, “You’re from Long Island, lose that.”

2) pudding wine: And this is what the British call dessert wine, i.e. like a wine you’d drink with your Christmas pudding I guess. Port’s a big thing in the UK but they drink it before or after dinner, not with. I like vintage port a lot.

Anyway, all that wine sounds pretty yummy to me. I’d totally want to go to one of these dinners, but the next few lines ruin it:

MOLESLEY
Blimey, it’s a wonder they make it up the stairs.

ANNA
They don’t drink much of any of it.

They definitely need to invite a few grapefriends to these Downton dinners! Too bad the help can’t go – my favorite is Thomas who stole a bottle of wine in Season 1. Dreamy.

thomas would probably cook a goose for dinner with that stolen claret
