Normally by this time of the year I’m settling into a nice groove of light reds. But this fall we’ve seen a wild swing of temperatures, with some days a crisp 50 and other days hitting 80 (even in the end of October). And it always seems to be raining too. So, I’ve been reaching for almost every type of wine—all styles, and from all over the world too.
Rosé
• Alma Negra Brut Nature Rosé: Sparkling with an interesting combo of Malbec and Pinot Noir, with the Malbec making it just a touch heartier for slightly cooler days. Sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Mendoza, Argentina. The coppery note was better on its own than when I matched it with spicy buffalo chicken. $25.99
• La Chapelle Gordonne: Great cranberry-inflected rosé from Côtes de Provence. $23.99
Whites
• Simonsig Chenin Blanc: Candied lemonade and yellow apple with a touch of fizz to make it dance. From Stellenbosch, South Africa, would be excellent with white fish, lemon, and capers. $14.99
• Trimbach Pinot Gris Reserve: Pulled out a 2016 which was full of succulent golden apple and a little pineapple even. Lush with still-good acid to balance it. Love Pinot Gris from Alsace. $32.99
Reds
• Ordinary Fellow Cabernet 2021: Have you had many wines from Colorado? Me neither! Try it! The cool climate keeps this Cab mentholly and well balanced with eucalyptus and light blackberry and black cherry notes. $38
• Covenant Red C 2020: Delicious wild blackberry and slightly funky earth notes from this Sonoma blend of Syrah, Malbec, Merlot and some Grenache. Acid and bold flavor will mellow with time, but it was great with my boeuf bourguignon. $51.99
