My dad loves Pinot best, and it’s always a great gift. Here are few based on what style your dad (and of course you since you’ll be sharing it) likes.
Dark red fruit: Humboldt County is near the Oregon border and, compared to other California winemaking regions, the shorter days and cooler climate produce some wonderfully balanced Pinots. The Joseph Jewell Phelps Vineyardhas black plum and black cherry but also lots of minerality. $45
Light red fruit: Crossbarn Sonoma Coast has bright rhubarb and strawberry, well balanced with acid. $37
Tart red fruit: Landmark Hop Kiln Estate from the Russian River Valley has silky cranberry, red plum, and a little cola. $50
Herbal: From Marlborough, New Zealand, The Better Half offers a much more affordable Pinot at $22, with lots of herbs, cherry and some light cocoa notes.
