Winter is all about fuller reds and summer claims rosé, but what about spring? There’s an in-between time where a few grapes really satisfy.
Catarratto: White florals, lemon spritz and low acid — this might just be the most perfect spring wine. Prevalent in Sicily and a grapefriend fave for aperitivo, try the refreshing Donnafugata Anthìlia, $19.95.
Viognier: This grape has really spread out from its roots in France. I recently had the Galil Mountain Aviv white ($19.99 here) from Israel, a joint venture winery between well-known Golan Heights Winery and Kibbutz Yiron. The Aviv white is 60% Viognier and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. With lilac, apple blossom, and a hint of grass, this is as spring-y as the label. No wonder, since “Aviv” means spring in Hebrew!
Pinot Gris: Another easy-drinking wine but with drops of green pear. The Alexana from Willamette Valley in Oregon has a touch of sour cream on the finish, like you’re eating a really light pear pie. ($31 here)
