Went to an interesting wait-staff education session the other day, where Catena taught the staff about the lighter bottles they’re using in their Vista Flores Malbec.
Who knew the weight of a bottle contributes most to the energy suck in the winemaking process? But 60% of carbon emissions come from the weight of the bottle. The average bottle weighs 550 grams, and Catena’s Vista Flores and High Mountain Vines bottles were clocking in at 700 grams. So they changed the mold of the bottle, made 99% of the glass locally, and reduced their bottle weight by 40% over 2008-2023.
All Catena bottles have now reduced their glass weight, with 97% of them below 510 grams and the Vista Flores natural line now only 380 grams.
As for the Malbec inside, there’s been no skimping on the body of this spicy plum and big blackberry red.
